Vice president reiterates Sudan commitment to reach peace in Darfur

April 8, 2006 (ABUJA) — The second vice-president, Ali Osman Taha, has reiterated the government’s commitment and seriousness to reach a peace agreement in Darfur which will satisfy all the parties.

Ali_OsmanTaha_brussels.jpgDuring his meeting with a US delegation led by ambassador Wayne Berger, Taha also discussed the obstacles preventing a peace accord to be signed. The two sides expressed hope that a peace agreement would be signed within the next two weeks.

The minister of state in the Foreign Ministry, Al-Samani al-Wasilah, in statements to the Sudanese radio after the meeting said agreements have been reached on alot of issues, which would lead to peace in Darfur.

He said the meeting also touched on the agreement signed in Naivasha besides developments in the Sudanese arena.

He affirmed that an agreement has been reached between Khartoum and Washington to restore bilateral ties between them for the common interests of the two countries.

The vice-president is this evening expected to meet the Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo and his deputy.

Taha will hold talks with Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, Congolese President Denis Sassou-Nguesso, AU Commission Chairman Alpha Oumar Konare and the AU mediator Salim Ahmed Salim as well as other African mediators, who are participating in the ongoing talks in Abuja today Saturday.

The vice-president arrived in Nigerian capital Abuja Friday 7 April to participate in the consultative meetings, which are aimed at strengthening and speeding the talks between the Sudanese government and rebel movements in Darfur.
