Ethiopia, Kenya ink security deal to halt rebels’ traffic
April 8, 2006 (ADAMA,) — Ethiopian and Kenyan governments signed a security agreement to prevent the movement of Oromo rebels through the border of the tow countries, the official ENA reported.
A cooperation agreement aimed at enabling to maintain the security in the common borders of Ethiopia and Kenya was signed in Adama town of Oromiya Regional State on Friday 7 April.
The agreement was signed at the conclusion of a two-day meeting of the 24th Ethiopia-Kenya Joint Border Administration Commission.
The nationality affairs main department director with the National Intelligence and Security Service, Mulugeta Mekonen, and the head of delegation and commissioner of the Rift Valley Province of Kenya, Ali Hassan Noor, signed the agreement.
According to the agreement, the two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation to maintain peace and security and halt “anti-peace forces” in border areas.
The two sides said tribal conflicts which had been observed in border areas earlier, have been minimized. They said encouraging results have been registered by strengthening sub-committees and organizing regular meetings of the commission on time.
The two sides also agreed to work jointly to create situations for free movement of citizens of both countries in the common border areas.
