Security Council Decision on transition from AU operation in Darfur to UN
Darfur Centre for Human Rights and Development
Press Release
April 13, 2006 — Darfur Centre for Human Rights and Development welcome the unanimous decision taken by the 15 Security Council members last Tuesday 11th April 2006 to support the proposed transition of AU operation to Darfur to UN. This will provide for more robust force in Darfur with a stronger mandate to protect civilians in Darfur who have been waiting for so long for the international community to come to their rescue and protection.
Darfur Centre for Human Rights and Development requests the UN Security Council to consider urgent deployment of a stabilizing force to support the AU forces in Darfur. The E.U., U.S.A. and U.N. should provide the necessary financial and technical assistance to the AU until at least September 2006.
This centre also condemns the decision taken by the Government of National Unity to deny entry to Darfur by U.N. Emergency Relief Coordinator Jan Egeland. We also express our deepest regret over the Government’s decision not to renew the contract of the Norwegian Refugee Council, a non-governmental organization (NGO)
