Member of Upper Nile State Assembly for Lungechuk County
PRESS STATEMENT
Subject: Fighting in Lungechuk County -16th April 06 at 6AM
There has been fighting on the 16th April 06 at 6AM local time in Lungechuk County in Guelguk, which is located in the northwest of the County.
The SPLA attacked the SSDF rebellious groups who refused to be integrated into SPLA structure. The attack was in retaliation to the 13th April 2006 ambush attack to the commissioners Stephen Pal Kun convoy, whereby one of his personal body guards was killed.
It was confirmed that 11 were killed from the militia group plus several more wounded with an unconfirmed number.
On SPLA side, only three obtain three light wound.
The militia group made no demand or provides any reason, why they had
been attacking SPLA groups thence the commissioners’ convoy in the
recent days. And SPLA had taken such decision to bring about stability
in the area by ensuring no base for such a group in the county which is
under it directs administration.
According to the commissioner, Lungechuk County is totally under the
control of the SPLA and the unconfirmed number of the Militia remnants
were scattered and survivors were displaced northward of the county.
According to SPLA local security information which was passed on by the
Commissioner himself the group was supported by Gosh (the Head of
National Security), based in Khartoum. This person is supporting all
other former SSDF group activities in the southern Sudan.
The concern now is that this situation in Lungechuk County kept
repeating itself.
Therefore it is my wish as a MP of the affected constituency to bring to
light the continuous violent and instabilities in the area.
I am therefore obliged to request the various level of the government
including the state, south Sudan and the National Unity to give priority to the security issues of Lungechuk and it neighboring counties. The
perpetrators must be identified and account for the human life lost and
the suffering they have caused the civil population. It should be a
joint effort from all levels of the government that the rule of law is
applied, reinforced and respected by all communities and persons.
Furthermore I am urging the international observers to put more effort
to see up to that the CPA contents and principles are respect by the
signatories. The fact that nothing so far has materialized in this
county, indicates the need for urgencies action.
