Ceasefire extended in Sudan’s Darfur region
KHARTOUM, Nov. 05, 2003 (dpa) — The Sudanese government and rebels of the Sudan Liberation Movement have agreed to a one-month extension of their ceasefire in the Darfur region, the state-run Sudan News Agency (SUNA) reported Wednesday.
The agreement was reached in the neighbouring country of Chad, where the original ceasefire agreement was brokered in September.
The region of Darfur has seen severe unrest despite the ceasefire, with claims that pro-government militias have been committing massacres among the civilian population.
The United Nations says more than 100,000 people have been displaced and thousands killed in the ongoing conflict.
