HDP Summit receives official endorsement from UNDP

Development Program

Press Release

APril 28, 2006 — The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has confirmed its formal endorsement of the inaugural Humanitarian Development Summit, scheduled to take place in Nairobi, Kenya on 3-5 October 2006 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).

The core objective of the summit, the latest initiative from the London-based Development Program Group, is to bring together the key international donor countries, UN agencies, NGOs, foundations and the global private sector in a meetings-based forum.

The objectives of the summit fall very much in line with the main focus of the UNDP, which has placed particular emphasis on ensuring partnerships with local operators and businesses within developing countries and in particular Africa. The support shown by the UNDP to governments and countries has played a leading role in the progress made so far in implementing the objectives and aspirations as expressed in the Millennium Development Goals.

“We are delighted and wholeheartedly welcome the support of the UNDP for this important summit,” said John Glassey, Program Director for the HDP. “They have played a huge role in addressing the current challenges facing the developing world, issues such as escalating hunger and poverty, raising education levels, improving healthcare, providing sanitary living conditions and promoting sustainable development as a long term structural objective for progress.”

Participation for registered NGOs is free of charge, with attendance from all relevant organisations welcomed. For further details please email [email protected]. Any UN agencies interested in attending should email [email protected].

There are also a number of sponsorship opportunities available for private sector companies across all business sectors who wish to become involved in the summit. For more information please email the Development Program at [email protected].
