Sudan arrests newspaper editor over petition from clerics

KHARTOUM, Nov. 06, 2003 — The media prosecution office [as received] arrested the day before yesterday the [Khartoum based newspaper] Al-Sahafa’s editor- in-chief, Adel al-Baz, and its editorial adviser, Nur al-Din Madani, in accordance with the communique no 766 under article 159 of the criminal law.

This came about after the Ministry of Guidance and Endowment [Awqaf] lodged a complaint against the newspaper which published a petition submitted by clerics from the mosques in Kosti [central Sudan] after misappropriation of endowment funds in Kosti.

The two were released on bail after investigation.
