Sudan decries US decision to maintain the country in terrorism list

April 29, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese Foreign Ministry has belittled the US Administration’s decision to keep Sudan on the list of countries which the USA accuses of sponsoring terrorism.

The official spokesman of the Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Jamal Mohamed Ibrahim, said Sudan expected fairness and objectivity in the assessment of the situation.

Sudan, however, understands that the US Administration is under internal pressure and that the issue is complicated. Despite being on the list Sudan is not concerned and will continue to cooperate with the international community in the fight against terrorism, he added.

Jamal went on to say that such the US decision does not help current efforts to bring about an all-inclusive peace agreement in Darfur and also complicates the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in January 2005 with the SPLM.

He further said that the US knows fully well that Sudan is cooperative enough in the global war on terror.

The State Department’s annual report on terrorism, released Friday 28 April, lists Sudan among six countries as state sponsors of terror, subject to U.S. sanctions.

The report praised Sudan for its cooperative commitment against known and suspected international terrorist elements believed to be operating in and out of Sudanese territory.

“Continued focus was placed on Sudan for its role in contributing fighters for the Iraqi insurgency” the report said.
