Sudanese army repulses Darfur rebels’s robbery attempt in the East
May 3, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese army today said have repulsed Darfur rebels’ robbery attempt on eastern Sudan highway yesterday evening, the official SUNA reported.
The office of spokesman of the armed forces said that a force from the rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) comprising 11 Land Cruiser vehicles Tuesday evening May 2 stopped a bus between Hadalia and Amadam areas over Kassala-Port Sudan highway and looted belongings of the passengers before releasing them.
The rebel force also stopped a truck carrying 10 Land Cruiser vehicles and attempted to loot it.
The spokesman said the armed forces moved to the site and saved six vehicles and chased the culprits to restore the rest of the vehicles.
It is to be noted that a government delegation that had been travelling at the time over the road was safe.
On 12 April a joint force of Eastern Front and Darfur JEM attacked two government-held towns Wagar and Nete in Kassala State near the Eritrean border. Eleven civilians and two attackers died in the raid.
