Egypt welcomes Darfur peace accord
May 6, 2006 (CAIRO) — Egypt welcomed today the signing of a peace agreement yesterday in Abuja by the Khartoum government and Sudan Liberation Movement, the biggest rebel faction in Darfur, on Friday night.
In a statement issued by the Presidency Saturday, Egypt called on all representatives of Darfur to sign the agreement and implement it.
Egypt underlined its support for the agreement and its resolve to continue to help the residents of the province.
Egypt announced readiness to participate in the peacekeeping forces that will be tasked with observing the implementation of this agreement.

The Arab Republic of Egypt is closely following the important stage of Abuja negotiations on the situation in Darfur. President Hosni Mubarak receives daily reports from his excellency’s personal representative in the negotiation process.
Egypt welcomes the signing yesterday of the peace agreement by the Khartoum government and the Sudan Liberation Movement and calls on all representatives of Darfur to sign the agreement and implement it in good intention in order to cap the African mediation efforts and the international partners and to achieve the higher interests of sisterly Sudan and the interests of all its sons.
The Arab Republic of Egypt underlines its support for the peace agreement in Darfur and its resolve to continue to provide its assistance for the people of the province and contribute to the efforts of re-building and reconstruction. Egypt stresses that it is ready to join the peacekeeping forces that will be tasked with monitoring the implementation of this agreement.
