Second Sudan Development Summit confirmed for December 2006

Second Sudan Development

May 17, 2006 — The Sudan Development Program is delighted to announce that it will be holding the second prestigious Sudan Development Summit in Khartoum on 4-6 December 2006. The summit will look to draw on the success of the inaugural Sudan Development Summit, which took place in Dubai on 12-14 February and was responsible for $460 million in contracts signed between Sudanese and international companies, along with a number of ministerial and other trade agreements being concluded.

The event, which will be the first of its nature to take place in Sudan, will be held at the much revered Friendship Hall, which also played host to the African Union and Arab League meetings this year in January and March respectively.

The summit forms part of the Sudan Development Program, which focuses on the massive potential of Sudan, with its strong growing economy and immense natural resources. Sudan is blessed with the sixth largest proven oil reserves in the world, while the country also benefits from a large quantity of other natural resources such as gold and minerals. Much of its vast and fertile land is uncultivated, offering huge potential for the agriculture sector, while Sudan also benefits from a large labour force.

Meanwhile, the signing of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) led to the formation of the first Sudan Unity Government, comprising for the first time representatives from both the northern and southern regions of Sudan and demonstrating the political will for Sudan to enjoy a bright future as the breadbasket of Africa.

The summit will take place on a number of levels, including key note panel presentations from government officials and senior business figures, one-to-one meetings, industry-specific workshops and an international exhibition. Sectors covered will include infrastructure, irrigation and water, food and agriculture, oil, gas, mining, transport, education, communications, technology and security.
