UN Security Council to visit Sudan on 5 June
May 25, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — The UN Security Council with all its members, headed by the envoy of Britain, Emyr Jones Parry, is due to begin a five-day visit to Sudan on June 5th to get acquainted with the situation in the country.
Sudan Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Omer Bashir, said that the Security Council’s visit aims for consultations with the officials at the federal and Darfur region’s levels on issues pending at the Security Council, the official SUNA reported.
The stated goals for Sudan visit is to stress the importance of achieving sustainable peace, security and stability in Sudan’s Darfur region, as well as to reiterate support for Darfur Peace Agreement signed on 5 May.
The visit aims also to reiterate support for the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed last year with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement to end the 21 years war mainly in southern Sudan
Bashir explained that the visit of the Security Council comes in the context of a tour that it would pay to a number of African countries.
He said that the Security Council’s visit will synchronize with important developments taking place in Sudan, top of them are the Comprehensive and Darfur Peace Agreements.
Ambassador Bashir said that the government was officially informed about the Security Council’s visit to the country, adding that this visit is aimed for consultation, but not to hold a meeting of the Security Council in Sudan.
In November 2005, members of the UN Security Council, led by the Permanent Mission of France to the United Nations, visited DRC, along with several other countries in the region. During the visit, the UNSC took steps to examine the implementation of Resolution 1612 on children and armed conflict in the context of DRC.
