Uganda Railways Eyes Sudan

By Abraham Odeke, New Vision

KAMPALA, Nov. 11, 2003 — Paul Etiang the new board chairman for the Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) has said the successful conclusion of the peace talks between the Southern Sudan rebels and the Khartoum Government could turn out to be a big blessing for the parastatal.

Speaking last week, Etiang said the businesspeople and other investors in the peaceful Southern Sudan would find it convenient to use the cheap Ugandan trains to transport bulk goods.

He was addressing the URC workers at the Tororo Railway Station.

“The whole world is eyeing the Southern Sudan whose leaders are now engaged in serious peace talks in Kenya. The challenge is on us to prepare the northern line so that we tap the business from across the border in southern Sudan” Etiang told the workers.
