Sudan People’s Liberation Movement calls for developing the South?
CAIRO, Nov 10, 2003 (KUNA) — Deputy Chairman of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), Silva Keer Monday called on the Arab League (AL) to play positive part in developing the South of Sudan, particularly the regions harmed by war.
In a statement to the press after meeting with AL Secretary General Amr Mousa, he commended the positive role played by the League and the efforts exerted for reconstruction after signing peace agreement at the end of this year.
Regarding the differences between SPLM and the Sudanese government on peace negotiations, Silva said a new round of negotiations would be held in Kenya at the end of this month.
He added some issues had not been settled yet. These are related to Nuba Mountains, the Blue Nile and Ibibi, in addition to the issue of dividing fortune and authority.
Silva pointed out that the discussions with the League concentrated on the obstacles that hinder AL role in the South, particularly the impression that the League used to support the Sudanese government against the South.
As for SPLM issuing new currency for the South, Silva said “this does not mean deepening separation, but due to economic reasons as the SPLM controls 70 percent of the South territories while there is no currency for trading.”
He stressed the expected peace agreement would be signed in Kenya, the sponsor state, not in the United States. He pointed out there is a US invitation to celebrate this agreement in Washington, not for signing it.
For his part, Sameer Hosni, AL Sudanese dossier official, announced that a delegation headed by himself would take part in the oncoming round of negotiations between the Sudanese government and SPLM in Kenya.
