General Lagu was last week a guest of honour at a graduation party for more than 60 southern Sudanese women at Afhad University in Khartoum.
The veteran politician told Sudan Radio Service (SRS) that during his time as Sudan’s vice president and President of the southern Sudan regional government, he planned to promote women’s education in the region.
He said he will share his plans for improving women’s education with the current government of southern Sudan.
Joseph Lagu said “I will be talking to the Government of Southern Sudan to take women’s education very seriously and to think over these proposals I have for developing women educational centres in Okaru or Mupoi. As I have said, when you educate a woman you educate a nation.”
Lagu encouraged women who did not access education during their childhoods to try to attend adult literacy classes.
