Minister urges donors to meet pledges for S. Sudan development
June 6, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — The Minister for Cabinet Affairs, Deng Alor Kual, has urged the international donors to honor their pledges for the reconstruction and the rehabilitation of the war-affected areas in the country.
The Minister stressed in his meeting with the members of the visiting UN Security Council Mission that this would help the IDP and the refugees return home and resume their daily normal life in the South and in Darfur regions.
The minister has briefed the members of the UN Security Council mission on the process of the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and the efforts exerted by the government of National Unity so that peace agreement was reached in Darfur as well as the efforts exerted to convince those who did not sign the deal to join the process.
The Minister has reaffirmed the commitment of the two parties to the CPA that they would not return to fighting despite the slow pace in the implementation of some clauses of the CPA but he stressed the Government of National Unity would continue its efforts for the remedy of these questions.
Alor has commended the role played by the Untied Nations and its efforts to give an impetus to the peace talks and negotiation in Naivasha, Kenya, and Abuja, Nigeria and also the expected push during the talks aimed at reaching a resolution to the question in the Eastern Sudan shortly.
The 15-member delegation arrived in Khartoum on Monday as part of efforts to persuade Sudanese leaders to accept a UN peacekeeping mission to replace the current under-manned AU force in the war-torn western region.
