Sudanese opposition leaders discuss national consensus

KHARTOUM, Nov. 13, 2003 — The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement’s [SPLM] spokesman, Yasir Arman, has said that there is ongoing communication between [opposition] leaders of the SPLM John Garang, Democratic Unionist Party Muhammad Uthman al-Mirghani, Ummah Party Sadiq al-Mahdi, and Popular National Congress Dr Hasan al-Turabi, on bringing about a national consensus. He denied reports that the four were preparing to meet in a foreign capital.
The opposition [National Democratic] Alliance’s ruling council has proposed to hold its next meeting in areas controlled by the rebels in the south, between 27 November and 14 December.
Sources belonging to the opposition have said the meeting will be crucial and there would be new plans for the future of the alliance and its role in the transitional period and democratic transformation.
