Planned explosion damages South Sudan government offices
June 14, 2006 (JUBA) — Government offices in Juba were damaged on Monday by an explosion of unwanted heavy rocket-propelled grenades.
The United Nations Mission in Sudan, or UNMIS, in conjunction with the Sudan Armed Forces in Juba, carried out a planned explosion at 5:30 pm, breaking windows and cracking walls in President Salva Kiir’s office.
The SPLA captain in charge of the President’s security, Jil Mangok, told Sudan Radio Service (SRS) “This is a serious case that will need a proper investigation or otherwise, the UNMIS and Sudan Armed Forces will be held responsible for the damages.”
As the Sudanes armed forces started redeployment its troops from the Southern Sudan to the northern Sudan in accordance with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, the detonation exercise was conducted in order to get rid of unwanted and expired ammunitions which can be unstable, therefore dangerous.
