Arab league watches eastern Sudan talks

June 14, 2006 (CAIRO) — The Arab League Secretary General, Amr Musa, pointed out that the Arab League is following up the progress of the negotiations between the Sudan government and the Eastern Front, which came in session Tuesday evening in the Eritrean capital, Asmara.

Amr_Mussa-3.jpgIn a press conference he held at the premises of Arab League here Wednesday, Musa said that Sudan government has acquainted the Arab League with outcome of the recent visit of the Eritrean President, Assias Afewrki, to Khartoum.

He said his meeting with. Presidential advisor Ismail and leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) Mohamed Osman al-Mergani on Monday and Tuesday was meant to coordinate for the negotiations of the East.

As for his visit to Libya, he said it was meant to discuss with the Libyan leadership the issues of Sudan, Somalia, Palestine and Comoros Islands.

Peace talks on ending a decade of fighting between the Khartoum government and an eastern rebel group opened in neighbouring Eritrea on Tuesday 13 June. Eritrean government leads the mediation between the Sudanese party.
