State Department warns Americans to avoid going to Sudan
WASHINGTON, Nov 14, 2003 (AP) — The State Department alerted Americans to terror threats in Sudan and told them Friday to avoid travel to the northeastern Africa country.
The United States has received indications of threats aimed at Americans and Western interests in Sudan, the department said in a statement.
Acts of terror might include suicide operations, bombings or kidnappings, the statement said. “U.S. citizens should be aware of the risk of indiscriminate attacks on civil targets in public places, which include tourist sites,” the department said.
In March, the department reminded Americans that travel to Sudan could be dangerous because of its civil war.
At the time, the State Department cited sporadic fighting among Sudanese government forces, the Sudan Peoples Liberation Army, or SPLA, and various militias in the southern part of the country.
On Friday, the department said fighting from the 20-year civil war had diminished greatly, but the two sides had not agreed to end the war.
