SLM- al-Nur slams suspension of UN mission in Darfur

Sudan Liberation Movement/Army

Press Statement regarding the suspension of the UN mission in Darfur by the GoS

June 25, 2006 — In continuation with its genocidal campaign against the people of Darfur, and in a breathtaking act, the GoS has suspended the United Nations’ mission in Darfur. It is no surprise that the GoS has made the decision to suspend the UN mission in Darfur, as it has suspended the work of the relief organizations in the region before. In doing so, and by suspending the UN mission in Darfur, the GoS is preparing to finalize the last chapter of its genocidal policy in the absence of the direct supervision of the international community and the United Nations in the region. The SLM/A would like to affirm the following:

– The SLM/A will not sit idle and let the GoS to continue on with its genocidal campaign against the people of Darfur. The SLM/A, again, appeals to the international community to expedite the deployment of the UN peacekeeping force to provide the protection needed in the region;
– The SLM/A also appeals to the United Nations, and its member states to pass tough resolutions and put more pressure on the GoS to stop the genocide in Darfur;
The SLM/A appeals to the International Criminal Court at the Hague to bring to justice, and as quickly as possible, those who have committed war crimes and crimes against humanity against the innocent people of Darfur.

– The UN and its member states have a role to play to ensure that twelve years from now survivors in Darfur are not subject to a Rwandan-style round of apologies from world leaders who have the opportunity now to change history and save lives in Darfur.
