European Union organizes conference to support Darfur peace
July 16, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — The European Union organizes a Conference next Tuesday to support Darfur peace process. The conference is intended to gather material support to the AU mission in Darfur so as to carry out its tasks in Darfur properly.
The Belgian capital Brussels will on Tuesday 17 July host a conference on Darfur to discuss ways of raising funds for the AU mission, the implementation of the Abuja peace agreement and the possibilities of transferring the peacekeeping mission in Darfur to the UN forces at the end of the year.
The Sudanese Foreign Minister, Lam Akol, will head Sudan delegation for the conference; the Secretary General of the UN, Kofi Annan, the Representatives of the European Union and United States would attend the conference.
The conference is due to assure the importance of the international community’s support to Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA), besides discussing the material support and the required mobilization which the donors can provide to Sudan in the framework of the implementation of the agreement.
The Sudanese delegation will explain the government’s vision and views on its rejection for the peacekeeping task in Darfur to be transferred to the UN forces.
The international community is expected to issue a message in support of the Abuja peace agreement, participate in its implementation and pressurize the parties opposing the agreement to sign and assist the government and the Sudan Liberation Movement in implementing the agreement.
The conference will also discuss the eastern Sudan peace negotiations and the Sudanese-Chadian ties and its effects on the situation in Darfur.
