Slovenia urges Sudan to release Presidential envoy to Darfur

July 26, 2006 (LJUBLJANA) — The Slovene Foreign Ministry on Friday called on the Sudanese embassy in Vienna and the German embassy in Khartoum for assistance in securing the release of Tomo Kriznar, President Janez Drnovsek’s special envoy to the western Sudanese province of Darfur.

In the requests for assistance, the ministry pointed out Kriznar’s humanitarian activities and stressed its hope that he be released as soon as possible due to his medical condition, said the Foreign Ministry today.

According to Slovene news agency, the Foreign Ministry joined the attempts to help Kriznar, who was arrested on 20 July for lacking a valid visa for Sudan, after a petition from Drnovsek’s office.

The Sudanese embassy has confirmed the receipt of the requests for Kriznar’s release and assured that he is being treated in a correct manner by the Sudanese authorities, reported the Foreign Ministry.
