Arab League welcomes Sudan-Chad restoration of ties

Aug 9, 2006 (CAIRO) — The Cairo-based Arab League (AL) on Wednesday welcomed the restoration of diplomatic relations betweenSudan and Chad, Egypt’s official MENA news agency reported.

Sudan, member state of the pan-Arab AL, and Chad decided to resume diplomatic ties on Tuesday during a visit by Sudanese President Omar el-Bashir to the Chadian capital N’Djamena.

AL Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs Ahmed bin Helli was quoted by MENA as saying that such an initiative to re-establish Chadian-Sudanese ties would help restore peace and stability in the region.

Sudan and Chad severed diplomatic relations in April after a rebel attack in N’Djamena. The Chadian government accused Khartoumof being behind the rebel rampage, a charge denied by Sudan.

Meanwhile, Sudan blamed Chad for supporting rebels in Sudan’s western region bordering Chad.

In addition, bin Helli said that the AL was keen on mobilizing regional and international efforts to implement the Darfur Peace Agreement signed earlier this year between the Sudanese governmentand a major rebel faction in Sudan’s Darfur region, along with solving the humanitarian problem in Darfur.
