South Sudan, Egypt agree to cooperate on water resources
Aug 9, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — The Ministry of Irrigation of South Sudan Government Wednesday signed a Memorandum of understanding with the Egyptian Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources for rehabilitation of stations to measure rain-fall in south Sudan.
In a press statement, the Minister of Irrigation of South Sudan Government, Joseph Dower, said that the agreement included extension of technical equipment, the assessment of water resources, forecast on flooding and drought as well as reviewing studies on Jongoli Canal.
He said that the memo of understanding also included the development and management of water resources, improvement of rain.
The minister said that according to the memo Egyptian government will assign scholarships for southern students for studying in Egyptian universities, besides holding joint workshops in the irrigation field.
Meanwhile, the Undersecretary at the Ministry of Irrigation of South Sudan Government said that the memo of understanding deals with enhancement of the rural economy and pushing ahead the development process in south Sudan.
He said that the memo of understanding was signed after consultation with the federal Minister of Irrigation, Engineer Kamal Ali Mohamed. The Undersecretary at the federal Ministry of Irrigation, Engineer Ahmed Al-Sanousi, indicated that the signing of the memo of understanding was the beginning of continuous cooperation between the two countries.
Responding to a question of journalist, Engineer said that the establishment of Hamdab Dam in Sudan was aimed for generation of electricity, but not to affect Egypt’s share in the Nile water.
