Sudan announces arrest of AU translator killer
Aug 12, 2006 (NYALA, South Darfur) — Sudan announced Saturday the arrest of the killer of the Sudanese translator who accompanied the U.N. humanitarian chief Jan Egeland during his last visit to South Darfur in May.
Violence cut short a visit by U.N. humanitarian chief Jan Egeland on 9 May as frustrated Darfuris attacked an aid worker and then ransacked the African Union post in Kalma Camp, beating a Sudanese translator to death. The anti-deal clashes spread to Zalengei, Tawila and Kass towns.
South Darfur Governor Al-Haj Atalmannan Idris told the state-run SUNA that SLM-Minawi and the government troops agreed to protect routs and important sites in order to put an end to the violence and “armed robbery” in the state. He also stated that a plan was set to disarm people.
South Darfur is lthe land of the Fur ethnic group who are opposed to the DPA signed on 5 May between the Sudanese government and the former rebel Minawi SLM.
