Leader of breakaway Darfur rebel JEM arrives in Khartoum

Aug 13, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — The leader of a breakaway faction of Peace of the Justice and Equality Movement, Abdelrahim Abu-Risha, arrived in Khartoum Sunday noon, coming from Nyala city, the capital of South Darfur State.

In a press conference he held upon arrival at Khartoum Airport, Abu-Risha stressed the importance of the Darfurian – Darfurian dialogue for supporting the peace process in Darfur region.

Abu Risha is one of rebel leaders who joined the Darfur Peace Agreement signed by the Sudanese government and the SLM-Minawi in Abuja las May. He inked a Declaration of Commitment to the DPA, which was signed on June 8 by leading figures of SLM- Abdelwahid al Nur and the Justice and Equality Movement in Addis Ababa.

He said that the Darfurian dialogue provides a people mechanism for implementation of Darfur peace agreement and enabling the people of Darfur to overcome the bitterness of the past.

He affirmed that the peace of Darfur can not be realized by the signatory movements alone, emphasizing the necessity of the unity of all the Sudanese people toward achievement of durable peace in Darfur.

Abu-Risha also called on all the citizens of Darfur to support the implementation of the peace agreement. He called on the national unity government to put into action Darfur peace agreement.

He said that his faction is coordinating efforts with the other signatory movements and factions for implementation of the Darfur peace agreement on the ground.

He congratulated the Sudanese people in general and the citizens of Darfur especially with Darfur peace agreement, affirming his readiness to cooperate with the implementation of the agreement as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, chairman of the committee for receiving the leaders of the movements and factions, who have signed the peace agreement, Hassan Bargo, has welcomed the return of Abu-Risha, adding that the national unity government is keen to implement Darfur peace agreement.
