Education minister asks scholarship for South Sudan students

Aug 15, 2006 (NAIROBI) –The Ministry of Education in the Government of Southern Sudan has asked a number of countries to offer scholarships to southern Sudanese students.

The Minister of Education, Micheal Milli Hussein, says his ministry has already discussed possible scholarship opportunities for southern Sudanese with Jordan, South Africa, Kenya, Uganda and Egypt, the Sudan radio service reported.

Speaking at a meeting with southern Sudanese students in Kenya last week, Milli Hussein said the scholarships will be provided “fairly and equitably”, based on merit and regional consideration.

“There must be fairness in the disbursement of these scholarships. Every area also wants to have a share in these scholarships. We are also asking the Kenyan government to give us free scholarships like what the Egyptians used to give us in the past. They used to give us 100 to 150 scholarships a year” Mili Hussein said.

The minister urged the students to be patient with the Ministry of Education as it tries to implement education programs in southern Sudan and for the students in the Diaspora.
