The Eritrean Mediator released the following press statement regarding the current Peace talks in Asmara between the Government of National Unity and the Eastern Sudan Front:

The Joint Committee mandated to formulate a comprehensive development program for Eastern Sudan, met during the period 8th – 17th August 2006. The two parties agreed on an extensive developmental initiative for Eastern Sudan and submitted its report to a session of the committee supervising the talks.

The specialized committee for Security and Military arrangements is scheduled to meet on 21st August 2006. Once this committee concludes its deliberations, the third specialized committee for Political Affairs and Power Sharing will convene immediately thereafter.

On August 16th 2006, Dr Mustapha Osman Ismail, head of the National Unity Government Delegation, made a stop over in Asmara on his way to Khartoum and discussed progress of the Technical Committee and arrangements for convening the remaining specialized committees.
