Sudanese opposition party denies it is fuelling fighting in west of the country
KHARTOUM, Nov. 27, 2003 — The PNC [Popular National Congress] led by Dr Hasan al-Turabi has rejected accusations by the first vice-president, Ali Uthman Muhammad Taha, that it is fomenting unrest in Darfur.
It says it regarded such accusations as a sign that the party would return to the same situation as before and its leader be arrested once again.
The PNC deputy secretary-general, Ibrahim al-Sanusi, said: “Those allegations are merely a pretext to damage the party and arrest its leaders, especially Dr Al-Turabi.”
On Sunday [23 November] Taha accused the PNC of fomenting unrest in Darfur region and hindering peace talks.
During the Id sermon the day before yesterday, Al-Sanusi said: “The government and its tyranny are the main cause of Darfur’s problems.”
