Sudanese opposition vows to confront the regime
Sept 11, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese opposition forces have said in a press statement that last Wednesday’s 6 September protest was the start of public confrontation with the regime.
Sudanese security forces fired tear gas and beat demonstrators with sticks on Wednesday 6 September in a crackdown on protests against price increases for basic goods, after thwarting similar protests a week ago.
A statement issued by the national forces opposed to the increase in the prices of sugar and fuel said that the mere fact that the demonstration had taken place was a victory.
It said the demonstration was one round in the battle and a firm step that must be followed by others.
It said the public had reaffirmed its readiness, will and determination for such a confrontation to force the regime to renounce all its policies which contradicted national interests.
The statement said that the national forces opposed to the increases would not become weary of the struggle and would continue to pursue, besiege and expose the government in front of the public until it is forced to reveal more of its real nature which conflicts with the interests of the people of our country.
In this regard, the national forces opposed to the price increases will be holding a press conference Tuesday 12 September during which the legal committee will be discussing the legal situation of the demonstrations and the ensuing court cases.
Khartoum recently raised prices of goods like petrol and sugar to fill a hole in the 2006 budget.
