This visit came after the removal of the former governor John Lat and the appointment of Daniel Awet Akot, two weeks ago. Kiir was in Rumbek last July after the inter-tribal fighting in the area.

Immediately after his arrival, Kiir held a closed door meeting with the state government in the governor office.

On 5 September Salva Kiir dismissed the governors of Lakes States, Western Equatoria State and Warab State. The removed governors was accused of corruption, and involvement in the incitement that led to the inter-clan clashes in their regions.
