South Sudan govt to renovate Juba University

Sept 19, 2006 (JUBA) — The Ministry of Education in the Government of Southern Sudan has contracted a Sudan-based construction company to renovate Juba University.

University_of_Juba.jpgKano for Trading and Investments Company won the contract to renovate the Juba University main campus as the university prepares to relocate to juba.

Speaking during the signing of the contract between the Ministry of Education and the company, the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Education, William Ater called on the university administration to cooperate with the company so that the renovation exercise could be done as soon as possible.

The company is expected to renovate 38 staff houses, 6 students residential halls, a dining hall, kitchen and the university’s l electrical, water and sewerage supply.

However, Mr. ater did not say when his ministry expects the renovation work to end.

Juba University is expected to relocate to Juba sometimes next year once the entire preparations are completed.

Established after Addis Ababa peace agreement in the seventies help in development of the south, Juba University moved to Khartoum North due to the insecurities brought about by the war in the south.

Since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, Juba University students demand the relocation of their university to Juba.

The Sudanese police arrested 200 Sudanese students at the University of Juba after clashes on Saturday 11 February because the students claimed to relocate the university to Juba.

Therefore, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) called for the relocation of Juba University back to southern Sudan, following the boycott of examinations by the university students on Saturday 8 April.
