Darfur international marathon
Editorial, The Sudan Tribune
September 25, 2006 — There is no doubt that Khartoum’s diplomacy managed for the past months and years to prevent the international community intervention to lift the suffering of Darfur people, and has succeeded in splitting the world views over Darfur crisis. But as the scale of atrocities mounts under the current Khartoum offensive in Darfur, the marathon has become more intensified and has reached its crucial stage last week in New York. And the entire world population is anxiously waiting to see, as whose determination will prevail in Darfur marathon, international community or Khartoum? This vicious and inhumane atrocity against the black African tribes has been going on in Sudan more than a half century ago. But for sure at the end of marathon, the will of people will prevail over the evil desire.
It is absurd to believe that the entire world do not have the exact perspective of situation in Darfur except Khartoum. The entire world wouldn’t be wrong and can’t be against Sudan, after all what they need from Sudan, nothing except welfare of Sudanese people. If Sudan were to be ideal in its claims, should have displayed to the people in West, Europe and United States and its own people the true perspective and situation in Darfur, without hindrance and restrictions on the media. But where is the role of Sudanese media in presenting fairly Darfur crisis to its audience, taking into account the views of the people on ground and in various internal displaced camps!
Sudanese people were divided in Darfur marathon and the majority pitted against their will, and the minority imposing its will upon the majority through its totalitarian rule. And as Ali Karti said that “Unfortunately, the people in the West, in Europe and the United States are moved by the media”, but what have moved people within Sudan, people within Sudan is moved by the bias and only government’s controlled media which never displays the footage and suffering of Darfur people in the state television screen, except the demonstrations, mobilization of local population, militias and PDF sentiments against world community. If the people within Sudan were to have the access of seeing the catastrophic scene of their Muslim brothers and sisters in Darfur, they will be moved and shamed more than the people in West, Europe and United States.
The regime in Khartoum has hijacked and changed the complete mind-set of the Sudanese people according to its own doctrine. The demonstrations against government policy and the rise in the oil prices were not permitted, but permitted against UN intervention to Darfur. The vast majority of Sudanese within Sudan and particularly in Khartoum do not have a clear perspective of Darfur crisis, and blindly supporting the regime and voicing anger against UN. And it makes no sense for Sudanese civil society to call on UN to re-allocate money for peacekeepers for humanitarian aid and development while the region is still on fire! Call in the Fire Brigades first to put off the fire, then call for aids and commence of re-building or development.
The Darfur marathon is clearly drawing in favor of Khartoum regime, as the extension of AU force till end of December 2006 is a victory to Khartoum diplomacy and golden opportunity to carry on its atrocities and plans to wipe up the black African tribes in Darfur. And it is a great setback and humiliating to Darfur people who need world assistance badly today rather than tomorrow! And it is a shame to see Khartoum’s sadism toward its own people! This vicious behavior of Khartoum will not bring peace to every corner of Sudan, but rather a complete destruction and disaster to the whole country.
