Sudan to clarify position on AU-UN cooperation in Darfur
Oct 3, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — Visiting Secretary General of the Arab League (AL) Amr Musa said on Tuesday that Sudan is likely to clarify its stance on cooperation between the African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) in the peacekeeping mission in the country’s restive western region of Darfur.
“President al-Bashir will present in the next period a comprehensive Sudanese initiative to activate the cooperation between the UN and the AU as well as the implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement” Musa told reporters following a meeting with Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir.
He said that “Sudan is free to accept or to reject” the proposal, which is to reinforce the AU peacekeeping forces in Darfur with the UN helps.
Meanwhile, Musa also renewed his commitment to “a full cooperation” between his pan-Arab organization and the African body for realizing peace in Darfur.
The AL chief, who arrived in Khartoum on Monday on a two-day visit in Sudan, held a meeting earlier Tuesday with Sudanese Foreign Minister Lam Akol on the latest developments in Sudan as well as other issues with common interests.
