NRF Invites International Red Cross to Visit Surviors of Kariari Battle in North Darfur

October 8, 2006 — The Intenational Red Cross and other relevant NGOs are requested to visit and assist with government and Janjaweed survivors of Kariari battle that took place yesterday October 7th 06. Many survivors are injured and require urgent medical attention. Remnants of the defeated army are still emerging from the desert and surrendering to the victorious NRF. Their number is expected to rise.

The defunct government force consisted of 2226 fighters. Among the many who surrendered are a number of army officers including their commander Brigadier (one star general) Abdel Rahman Mohamed Abdel Rahman. The NRF assures relatives of Mr. Abdel Rahman and the rest of the POW that they are in the safe hands of the NRF and they will be treated with due respect and in accordance with our Sudanese values and international conventions. Furthermore, the NRF captured close to 100 vehicles, numerous trucks and large quantities of heavy artillery and other weapons.

In another twist, Albahir has now moblised a force from Elgeneina heading towards the NRF territory on October 8th. This new force is formed of regular army soldiers, so-called Popular Defence Force and Janjaweed. Despite our efforts to maintain sanctity of Ramadan and give peace a chance, Albashir continues in his futile military gambling in Darfur.
