Egypt says working to bring viewpoints closer over Darfur

Oct 10, 2006 (CAIRO) – Cairo is working to avoid escalation between the Sudanese government and the international community, said the Egyptian Foreign Minister indicating his country efforts to bring viewpoints closer.

Egypt_abualkhait.jpgEgyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Aboul Gheit has briefed today EU envoy to Sudan Pekka Haavis to on Egypt’s viewpoint regarding the developments of the Darfur crisis.

He noted that Egyptian viewpoint was represented in the need for the Sudanese government and the UN to hold dialogue to reach an understanding that might contribute to restoration of stability and peace in Darfur region as soon as possible.

In statements to reporters following his meeting with the EU envoy, Aboul Gheit said he reiterated Egypt’s stand that stressed the need to avoid escalation or hard-line attitudes. He affirmed that the Sudanese government’s approval of deploying of international troops in Darfur was inevitable and could not be ignored.

He added that all parties should consider different alternatives and compromises that could contribute to overcoming the current crisis in Darfur province. He pointed to Egypt’s efforts to put forward solutions and bring viewpoints closer.
