AU Chairman saddened by Pronk’s expulsion
Oct 25, 2006 (ADDIS ABABA) — African Union Commission chairman, Alpha Oumar Konare, said he was “saddened” by the Sudanese government’s decision to expel the UN special envoy Jan Pronk from the country.
In a note published yesterday, Konare underlines the importance of Pronk’s work “in favor of security and human rights, and the constant efforts for the promotion of reconciliation and the achievement of lasting peace in Sudan”.
Konare asked all parties involved in Darfur’s conflict to “abstain from actions which might put the peace process at risk” and, in particular, to “immediately stop all military actions which might risk worsening security in Darfur”.
“Political dialogue is the only way to reach a lasting peace in Darfur and in all Sudan” concluded Konare.
