Khartoum to sign peace deal with some Darfur local commanders

Nov 6, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese government reportedly would sign a peace deal with local commanders from Abdelwahid al-Nur group in the Libyan capital Tripoli during the next week.

SLA_rebels_disembark.jpgAccording to press reports published in Khartoum, secret talks between the government and unidentified military commanders of a faction from the rebel Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM) led by Abdelwahid Mohamed al-Nur have progressed with the two sides agreeing on the contentious issues.

The report did not elaborate the nature of these issues.

The Khartoum based Al-Ray al-Aam has reported that senior government officials were holding secret talks with the field commanders of the splinter SLA faction in Jabal Marra. The talks were held in three rounds.

The minister of youth and sports, Muhamed Youcef, and southern Darfur governor, Al-Haj Ata al-mannan, participated in the first and second rounds of these talks, while the Sudanese intelligence Service chief Salah Gosh and presidential advisor Majzoub al-Khalifah participated in the third round.

The peace agreement would be signed in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, on Tuesday 7 November or Wednesday 8 November after African Union rejected the Sudanese government’s idea of signing the peace agreement at the AU headquarters in Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia.
