Nov 14, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — The African Union Mission in the Sudan (AMIS) categorically condemns the attack by suspected Janjaweed elements on the village of Sirba, 65 Km South of Kulbus in west Darfur in which 30 people were reported killed and 40 others injured.

The sad incident which took place on 11 November, 2006, was said to have been carried out by assailants on camels and horses who also razed half the village to the ground.

AMIS would like to note that incidents of this nature at this point in time when Darfurians should be focusing all their attention on how best they can benefit from the DPA through taking part in its implementation, are totally unacceptable and completely out of step with realities on the ground in the region. The perpetrators of such heinous crimes deserve to be apprehended and brought to justice.

AMIS appeals to the GoS authorities whose responsibility it is to ensure the safety of the people of Darfur to step up efforts to thwart and contain such acts.
