Mubarak, Salva Kiir discuss peace and stability in Sudan

Nov 22, 2006 (CAIRO) — Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak met on Wednesday morning Sudanese First Vice-President Salva Kiir to discuss the latest developments on the Sudanese arena.

Mubarak and Kiir discussed issues related to the Darfur conflict in western Sudan, implementation of the peace agreement in South Sudan as well as current tension on the Chadian-Sudanese borders and other issues of internal situation in Sudan, Egyptian news agency MENA quoted Kiir as saying.

Kiir, who arrived Cairo on Tuesday for a three-day visit, expressed appreciation for Mubarak’s efforts to bring about peace and stability in Sudan and hoped that Mubarak would continue such efforts until a national reconciliation among all Sudanese is realized, according to Egyptian presidential spokesman Soliman Awwad.

The talks also covered the outcome of the six-way summit that took place in Tripoli on Tuesday among the leaders of Egypt, Chad, Sudan, Libya, Eritrea and the Central African Republic, Awwad added, stressing that a peaceful settlement to Darfur problem would affect the entire situation in Sudan and would back development efforts there.

The progress achieved as regards the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement for South Sudan in January of 2005 was among the topics of both sides’ talks, said Awwad, noting that Kiir hoped Egypt would continue backing infrastructure and development projects in South Sudan and would play a role in encouraging Arab and Egyptian investors to take part in the reconstruction of South Sudan.

Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazef on Wednesday also met with Kiir to enhance bilateral cooperation and activate signed agreements between the two countries.

Talks between Nazef and Kiir tackled Egypt’s efforts to help develop Sudan, including opening a branch of Alexandria University in Juba in southern Sudan and other projects in agricultural, transport, power, medical and cultural domains.

Likewise, the two sides discussed the issue of realizing peace in Sudan and the Sudanese government’s moves to activate peace agreements and achieve stability in Darfur region in western Sudan.
