Salva kiir holds talks in Cairo on South Sudan development
Nov 22, 2006 (CAIRO) — The First Vice President, Salva Kiir Mayardit held talks with Egyptian and Arab officials in Cairo on southern Sudan development in order to boost Sudan unity and the peace process.
After a meeting with the Egyptian Prime Minister, Ahmad Nazif, the two parties agreed to work together in the fields which relate to development, such as infrastructures, electricity power, water resources, education, health services, irrigation, agriculture, besides encouraging the investment in south Sudan.
The first vice-president said that the two parties signed a number of memos of understanding in the field of irrigation, including completion of studies on Jonglei canal and other projects.
The Egyptian prime minister appreciated the work of South Sudan Government for implementation development projects on the ground. He said that Egypt is keen to support its brothers in south Sudan as much as possible.
Salva Kiir today discussed with the Arab League Secretary General, the Arab world contribution in the southern Sudan development.
Musa said that the Arab League would establish am office in Juba to follow up implementation of the decisions of the Arab League, which was held recently in Khartoum and to be a juncture of communication between south Sudan and the Arab League.
He said that the Arab League is working to make the unity between north and south Sudan as an attractive option, and also working to support the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement on the ground.
While the Egyptian foreign minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, affirmed that Egypt would continue supporting everything aimed at developing and reconstructing the south. He noted that the Egyptian general consulate in Juba closely followed up the joint projects and its concern with it so as to strengthen cooperation and brotherhood between the two people.
Aboul-Gheit said his meeting with the first vice-president was a very friendly one and reflected the depth of brotherly ties between the Sudanese and Egyptian people generally, and the solid cooperation between Egypt and the southern government.
