Sudan’s Bashir say committed to amend relations with Chad

Nov 27, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has stressed his commitment to resolving strained relations between his country and neighboring Chad, as Khartoum denied today providing any support to Chadian rebels.

President Bashir said at a press conference in Khartoum “We are determined that no opposition armed group leaves Sudan and enters Chad to destabilize its security as destabilizing security in Chad, however much we make an effort in Darfur, will also be one of the main possible destabilizing factors to the situation in Darfur more.”

He affirmed that Sudan is also keen to implement Tripoli protocol and the mechanism of border monitoring to prevent opposition attacks on the two countries.

On the other hand, the spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Ali al-Sadiq, has said that the Chadian accusations that Sudan was supporting Chadian rebels came under the framework of continuous accusations that were unfounded as the Chadian government was not able to prove these accusations with any legitimate evidence and was only an attempt to blame other parties for their failure.

Sudan had no relation in any way with what was going on in Chad as it was an internal affair, he said. Al-Sadiq affirmed that Sudan did not interfere in other peoples affairs.

He went on to say that these rebels did not emerge from Sudanese territories as claimed by the Chadian interior minister and also affirmed that Sudan did not train Chadian rebels as Chad does with some groups in Darfur.

Chad on Sunday accused Saudi Arabia as well as neighboring Sudan of mounting “a large scale operation to destabilise it”.

“This operation bears the hand of Sudan and Saudi Arabia,” he said. “It’s Sudan and Saudi Arabia that are equipping and training mercenaries, and providing them with the necessary logistics to attack Chad today on several fronts in the east;” said Chadian Communications Minister Hourmadji Moussa Doumgor.
