AU to appoint special representative for Darfur
Dec 1, 2006 (ABUJA) — The African Union (AU) has planned to appoint a special representative for the troubled Darfur region inwestern Sudan, Nigerian media reported on Friday.
This is one of the agreements reached at the end of the AU Peace and Security Council meeting, which was held shortly after the close of the first Africa-South America summit in Nigerian capital Abuja.
Disclosing the decision at the end of the meeting, the AU Commissioner of Peace and Security Said Djinit said the special representative would be jointly appointed by the AU and the UN secretary-general.
