Egypt grants 239 scholarship for southern Sudan

Dec 7, 2006 (JUBA) — The Egyptian government will grant 239 scholarships to southern Sudanese to attend Egyptian universities in the coming year.

Addressing journalists at Juba Airport after an official visit to South Africa, Government of Southern Sudan Minister of Education Michael Milly Hussein said the names of those accepted for studies at Egyptian universities will soon be announced.

Hussein added that the South African government has also accepted to offer a limited number of scholarships to both undergraduates and post-graduate students for the 2007 academic year.

“I requested positions in various institutions of learning in the form of scholarships either to undergraduates or post-graduates. Luckily enough the South Africans said they have no problems with number of post-graduates, they can accept any number of students we have prepared to send to them, but they may give us limited number of seats for the undergraduates because they have their own problems. So it is very good they have agreed to give us post-graduates opportunities.” Hussein said.

The Minister said that the number of post-graduate students for Egyptian universities is yet to be announced.
