EU pledge 150 mln euros in support of Darfur peace process
Dec 18, 2006 (KHARTOUM) — After a meeting wit a Sudanese official on best ways to find a lasting solution to Darfur crisis The European Union envoys in Sudan have promised 150 million euros in support of resolving Darfur crisis.
The Chargé d’affairs of the Embassy of Federal Republic of Germany in Sudan, Roland Schissau Monday announced that the European Union has pledged 150 million euros to help tackle ongoing crisis in Sudan’s troubled Darfur region.
The support will begin in 2008 and will last for five years, said the German diplomat.
In a meeting held with the Sudanese Minister of Youth and Sports (SPLM) Mohamed Youssef Abdallah, EU ambassadors explored means to resolve Darfur crisis.
The international community is seeking to get acquainted with Sudan government’s measures tending to improve the situation in the region, Schissau said.
The diplomat has called for consultation with the government of Sudan on means for resolving the issue.
The European Union Commission is the principal contributor in the efforts by the international community in resolving the Darfur crisis with a contribution estimated at Euro 340 million to the African Union peacekeeping force in Darfur.
This contribution will be augmented by an additional 40 million Euros out of which 26 million will be expended on food supply.
