Egypt welcomes Security Council statement on Darfur
Dec 21, 2006 (CAIRO) — Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit welcomed a statement issued by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) two days ago on means of handling the Darfur crisis.
He considered the statement as an important step to reach an international agreement on the optimal means of dealing with the repercussions of the Darfur stand-off., the state-run MENA reported
In press statements Thursday 21 December, Aboul Gheit asserted that the statement reflected the international community’s inclination to overcome the differences that ensued from Resolution 1706.
He hailed the positive atmosphere that prevailed at recent meetings between the US envoy to Sudan and Sudanese officials which he considered as a good development in the two sides’ stances that seemed to be seeking a swift solution to the Darfur problem.
He also voiced hope that an agreement would be reached during the coming few weeks for dispatching hybrid peacekeeping forces to Darfur.
Aboul Gheit said efforts would continue to convince non-signatory parties to join the Abuja peace accord in order to clinch a comprehensive peace agreement and get all parties to cease fire so that humanitarian assistance could reach the hands of the Sudanese people.
The Egyptian top diplomat highlighted the importance of maintaining the language of dialogue and staving off any escalation, asserting his country’s support for any drive that would lead to establishing peace and stability in the western Sudanese region.
