Government delegation to visit Sudanese Diaspora in the USA

Jan 8, 2007 (KHARTOUM) — A Sudanese government delegation will start three-week visit to the United States of America to visit the Sudanese community. The visit aims also to encourage return to the country to participate in the development.

Minister of Cabinet Affairs Deng Alor, Wednesday 10 January will fly to USA heading a high ranking delegation. The visit tends to look into the situation of the Sudanese Diaspora and brief them on the latest developments in the country.

The delegation will draw Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Mutrif Sidiq, Minister of Cooperation of the government of south Sudan, Benjamin Bernaba, deputy Secretary General of the Sudanese Expatriates Authority and Director General of Communities and Information.

The visit also aims to mirror the role of the Expatriate Authority, involve the Sudanese expatriates in peace and rehabilitation and facilitate their voluntary return.

There are no official statistics on the number of the Sudanese community in the US; their number is estimated at more than 200.000. The Sudanese migration to the USA started in the eighties and particularly after the Islamist coup d’état in 30 June 1989.
