Rumbek secondary school looks for a construction company
Jan 3, 2007 — Who will build the better Sudan? It is you and me, according to Sudan Radio Service—based on this phrase, we the Southern Sudanese outside the country are working hard, hand in hand with our friends wherever we are in hope to rebuild our devastated country.
For this reason, I want to offer my contribution to my beloved homeland. A couple of my American friends and I founded a nonprofit organization in late 2004—Hope for Humanity Inc. which based in Richmond, Virginia USA to support and encourage educational development in south Sudan.
Currently, our two pilot projects for this organization are to award scholarships to south Sudanese youth living in Kenya and Uganda and to build a new secondary school at Atiaba in Rumbek, south Sudan. Over thirty youth have benefited from our scholarship program, with eight graduating from secondary school and certificate/diploma programs.
Since its founding, Hope for Humanity Inc. has been actively engaged in fundraising efforts in hopes of building a new secondary school in Rumbek which would create space for many primary school graduates who have no means of furthering their education through the high school level due to lack of educational facilities in the region. After visiting Rumbek Senior Secondary in 2005, the president of Hope for Humanity determined that the school was overcrowded while many primary school graduates were still loitering and herding cattle. Upon her return from southern Sudan, she shared the findings with the board of directors and it was decided that it would be more important to create another secondary school to accommodate those students who could not be admitted to the Rumbek Senior School because of lack of rooms.
Hope for Humanity Inc. hopes to accommodate all kind of students among the Sudanese regardless of race, religion, color or ethnic background when the construction finishes.
However, despite money in hand for the job, it is hard for us to find a reliable company to build our school. We have searched different angles in south Sudan, but we failed to find the willing company that can start soon as we demand and for a reasonable price.
Our planned phase one for the school is an eight classroom structure and administrative building. We are hoping to find a low cost method which will produce a permanent structure. Future plans include making the school a full boarding facility.
For this reason, we are seeking a construction company willing to move in to Rumbek and build our school for us. Our plan is to start as soon as possible and not later than February.
