Sudan’s FM briefs Kuwait officials on Arab efforts, peace process
Jan 14, 2007 (KUWAIT) — Sudan’s foreign minister briefed the Kuwaiti Amir about Sudanese effort in Iraq, Lebanon and Somalia. He also informed the Kuwaiti authorities on Sudan peace deals in Darfur and eastern Sudan.
Kuwaiti deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohamed Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah said here on Sunday that the visiting Sudanese Foreign Minister Lam Akol Ajawin briefed the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah about efforts exerted by Sudan in Iraq, Lebanon and Somalia.
Sudan is chairman of the current Arab League.
Speaking at a joint news conference with Ajawin, Sheikh Mohamed said that Ajawin conveyed an invitation extended by Sudan’s President Omar Al-Bashir for the Amir to visit the country, saying that the Amir accepted the invitation and would specify a later date for the visit.
He added that the meeting between Ajawin and the Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Mohamed Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah tackled the efforts exerted by Sudan in Darfur, in addition to eastern Sudan agreement that was signed recently as well as the implementation of the peace accord in south Sudan.
Sheikh Mohamed said that he discussed with Ajawin means of fostering bilateral relations and joint efforts between the two countries aimed at achieving Arab conciliations in Iraq, Lebanon and Somalia.
He pointed to the role played by the Sudanese presidential advisor Mustafa Osman Ismail in the Lebanese mediation and the Iraqi national reconciliation.
Sheikh Mohamed described his efforts as “significant” at this stage.
He added the meeting also touched on the developmental efforts exerted by Kuwait in Sudan and the “historic” role played by Kuwait in supporting south Sudan.
On his part, Ajawin praised the Kuwaiti financial support for his country, describing both countries’ ties as “ancient and progressing.” He urged the Kuwaiti investors to invest in his country, saying that Kuwait has a well-known history since the seventies in Sudan and Kuwaitis have good friends in south Sudan.
Ajawin’s visit is the first to the country since he took charge of the post last September 2005.
